Heritage Days

The Chincoteague Museum is partnering with the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance (CCA), the Chincoteauge Island Arts Organization (CIAO), Chincoteauge Island Library, the Chincoteague Natural History Association, Assateague National Seashore, and the Virginia Barrier Islands Center to celebrate Heritage Days. The theme this year for the Museum’s opening weekend and the surrounding events is “Remembering Assateague Village”. This collaboration highlights the Museum’s current exhibit, “When Assateague was Home”. The exhibit has been expanded and the various Island organizations have come together to create a weekend full of events to celebrate, and educate people about, Assateague Village and its people. The GLOBE Observer Citizen Science App: Clouds

Want to be a citizen Earth scientist? Download the GLOBE Observer app and join us to learn how to record sky observations, identify cloud types, and compare them to NASA Satellite images to help scientists understand the sky from above and below. This program will be presented by NASA Wallops Flight Facility’s Brian Campbell, Senior Earth Science Education and Communication Specialist. This program is free and open to all ages! The Chincoteague Storytelling Guild is a partnership of the Chincoteague Island Library, the Museum of Chincoteague Island, and the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance (CCA). Two baby eagles on the nest at the Refuge! The live feed isn’t online, but you can stop by the visitor center to watch the nest footage in person!

Spring Pony Roundup Info from Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company (CVFC) and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge will welcome visitors to view the Spring Roundup at the South Pony Corral on the evening of Friday, April 7 and the morning of Saturday, April 8. Please enjoy this opportunity to view the ponies while observing safety precautions posted by the CVFC. As a safety precaution, the Service Road will be closed Saturday April 8 at D-dike to all visitors until roundup activities are completed in the afternoon.

SECOND BUS ADDED FOR SPRING POST ROUNDUP TREK

THE CNHA WILL ADD A SECOND BUS LEAVING THE BATEMAN CENTER AT 2:30 PM ON SATURDAY APRIL 8. A MINIMUM OF 20 TICKETS MUST BE SOLD FOR THIS TREK IN ORDER TO ROLL THE BUS. MINIMUM MUST BE MET BY APRIL 1. TICKETS ARE $25.00 EACH AND MAY BE RESERVED USING VISA, MASTERCARD, OR DISCOVER, BY CALLING 757-336-3696. IF MINIMUM NUMBER OF TICKETS IS NOT SOLD BY APRIL 1, ALL TICKETS FOR THIS TREK WILL BE REFUNDED. THIS TREK IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN AGES 8AND UNDER.

Town of Chincoteague received a $1.5 million grant from CNWR

The Town of Chincoteague has received a $1.5 million grant from the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge to develop a multi-use trail along Maddox Boulevard and additional side streets in order to improve public safety and ease of access to the preserve.

Waterpark Update

On March 6, 2017 in a 5-1 vote the Chincoteague Town Council approved a conditional use permit allowing the construction of a water park at Maddox Campground.

Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) zone changes…

On March 15, the Hook OSV zone closes & North OSV zone opens.  OSV permit required.

New Restaurant

The Jackspot will reopen as Ropewalk this Spring.  The Ropewalk is an open-air waterfront chain restaurant, with with locations in both Delaware and Maryland.  Planned upgrades include the addition of sliding doors for an open-air dining experience, a barge bar on the water, a playground, cornhole boards and a fire pit.  They are aiming to open Ropewalk, Chincoteague, in late April.

New Campground

The former “Maddox Campground” will reopen as “Chincoteague Island KOA” on Memorial Day.

Tales for Tots
The Chincoteague Island Library is hosting “Tales for Tots” every Thursday at 10 a.m. through May 25, 2017 (unless Accomack County Schools are closed or have a delayed opening).  Preschool stories, songs, and crafts for children from two to five years of age.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Free & open to all.  No registration required.

When Assateague was Home
The Museum of Chincoteague Island is extending and expanding its exhibit “When Assateague was Home”. All are welcome to view the updated exhibit when the Museum reopens in late March. The exhibit features personal memories, photographs, and artifacts relating to Assateague Village from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Museum is urgently asking anyone who has stories, memories, and/or artifacts (to loan or photograph) relating to Assateague Village to please contact us.
