Chincoteague – Tacos at Pico Taqueria

August 29, 2022

When you first visit Chincoteague, VA you are met with the coastal vibes of a historical seaside town. As you explore the region surrounded by water, beach, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge you are immersed in nature. You definitely wouldn’t be thinking… ”I bet they have the best tacos on the east coast…” But dare I say, “they do.” Pico Taqueria marries culinary art with classic tacos in a way that is simply unbelievable. I had the chance to check out the restaurant recently. I was so blown away by this place that I had to write a feature blog post about it… Chincoteague – Tacos at Pico Taqueria!

Tacos at Pico Taqueria History

Several years ago four friends came together to open Tacos at Pico Taqueria. Twin brothers, Dylan and Nathan Moot, and their partners Rosie (Dylan) and Kate (Nathan). Because it offers a, “creative take on a classic dish that everyone can relate to. Our motto is ‘you can put anything on a taco’ and new creations are being made every day from the bounty of the Eastern Shore. Our unique menu and specials will always showcase new flavors and combinations to try.” (Source)

Dylan has 15+ years of experience in every aspect of restaurants. Markedly, he has worked for some amazing restaurants along the way like: Cindy Wolf’s “Charleston”, Daniel Boulud’s Café “Boulud”, Wine Cask Restaurant, and Firehole Ranch. Rosie met Dylan at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Academy of Culinary and they have been working together ever since. Furthermore, she has 14 years of experience in both the front and back of the house. “Our resident jack of all trades, Nate, has years of experience in every aspect of front of the house operations in fine dining restaurants across the United States.” Kate is the “glue that holds” it all together. Undeniably, her event coordinator experience gave her all the tools she needed to help make Pico Taqueria what it is today!

They offer tacos for $4.50! Or you can get it in a bowl for $13.25. Here are your options…

  • The first up is the “Chincoteague Classic” which comes with your choice of chicken, pork, beef, or fried fish, with lettuce, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, crème fraiche.
  • Next is the “The Main Street” which is seared and seasoned shrimp, chipotle creme fraiche, green cabbage slaw, guacamole, queso fresco.
  • Then you have “The Ridge” which is carne asada, chimichurri, house pickled hot peppers, red cabbage slaw.
  • This is one of my favorites! The “Chicken City” is blackened chicken, corn and black bean salsa, avocado cream, cotija cheese.
  • For the vegetarian they offer “The Deep Hole” which is roasted cauliflower, caper pico de gallo, parmesan cheese, garlic aioli, crispy shallots. See below in the bowl version…
  • This is the only one that is a different price (Taco $5.50 / Bowl $15.25) but that is because of the seafood aspect I believe. “The Maddox” comes with cornmeal fried oysters, pickled carrots, daikon radish, house tartar sauce, Thai basil. It’s unreal how tasty this taco is!

Secondly, they have some great side options which you can check out here. And you will even find a kid’s menu option with a quesadilla! While they have some great soda, house made tea and lemonade and a good assortment of beer…the thing you have to try is the Pico Margarita. I had enough to enjoy my walk back to the cabin. Please be sure to check out this amazing restaurant when you visit Chincoteague and you will be greeted with a warm reception and leave with a full belly.
