Are you visiting Chincoteague Island soon? Or are you a local looking for weekend plans? Look no further than the Chincoteague Island Farmers And Artisans Market! This weekly event is a staple of the island community and offers fresh produce, handmade crafts, and an overall fun and welcoming atmosphere. Read on for all the details on dates, times, featured vendors, and more.

History Of The Chincoteague Island Farmers And Artisans Market

We were able to catch up with Lexi Hubb of the Chincoteague Island Farmers and Artisans Market. She speaks about the history of the market and where things are today. Read below for the interview:

How has the market grown since you started working with it in 2014?

“The market grew tremendously when it went from about six vendors who gathered Saturday mornings in a downtown parking lot to the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance sponsoring it in 2014, and was primarily managed by Alex Hubb, a recent retiree from PA.

Accompanying the move was the creation of a monthly event called the Second Saturday Artful Flea. On these days, local artists, artisans, and antique sellers were invited to sell their wares.

Everything shut down in 2020, and when we reopened in 2021, the Markets committee decided to eliminate the SS Artful Flea and invite those participating vendors every Market day, thus creating the Farmers and Artisans Market.

In 2021, our daily count averaged 20-30 vendors In 2022, our average daily count jumped to 40-45. Between 2021 and 2022 we made no changes, so the increase in vendors was not because of a particular effort. This summer, most of our Market days will feature an average of 45-50 vendors per day.”

What makes your market unique or extra special?

“Our Market is managed 100% by volunteers. It started with Alex Hubb and when his health restricted him from being on the field, a committee developed.

The committee now consists of 9 people who make the market happen and love it because we understand the community impact that the Market provides for locals who live here as well as vacationers.

In May 2023, the Market field was officially named the Alex Hubb Field to honor his time and love for the Market until his passing in November 2022.”

Tell us about some of the featured vendors (food and artisan) that you are excited about for 2023.

“Our total roster for this season consists of 115 vendors so it’s impossible to pick favorites.

There are some vendors who have been with us since the very beginning. We’ve always strived to acquire more food vendors and have some exciting, new to us vendors joining us this season.

We are working to brand the Market to eventually be 100% handmade or homemade, so all new admissions must fit those standards.”
