After over a year of being closed to the public due to the pandemic, the Assateague Lighthouse is finally open to visitors once again! Located on the Virginia side of Assateague Island, this historic lighthouse is one of the most impressive landmarks in Virginia. If you’re looking for an exciting and unique adventure, be sure to put the Assateague Lighthouse on your list of things to see!

History of the Assateague Lighthouse

While the Fish & Wildlife Service has owned it since 2004, the Coast Guard maintained the lighthouse for many years before them. The top of the lighthouse is accessible to the public, and it is still an active navigational aid.

The lighthouse stands at a towering 142 feet tall and first opened in 1867. Built like a rock, it is able to withstand hurricanes, beach erosion, and even fire, making it a true testament to the resilience of American craftsmanship. The first time you see it up close, it’s easy to see why it’s such an iconic landmark in Virginia. The Assateague Lighthouse is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply enjoying the beautiful view from the top.

Visiting The Lighthouse

If you’re planning to take a lighthouse tour, it’s important to note that the top is only accessible on certain days and times. Visitors can climb the 175 steps for a breathtaking panoramic view during select hours on Saturdays between May and October.

However, the visit is well worth it for the stunning view of the surrounding area. During the climb, visitors can also take a pause on one of the landings to appreciate the historic Fresnel lens that still operates to this day.

For an even more thrilling experience, one of the best ways to see the Assateague Lighthouse is by taking a boat tour. On certain days, visitors can book an Assateague Cruise or kayak trip from neighboring Chincoteague Island in Virginia.
