Captain Barry’s Sea Life Expedition

Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruises is an interactive skill building experience. We are a floating classroom, a research vessel with hands- on – feet wet lessons.

One of the many things we do is get off the boat on the sandbars to go dig in the mud for sea creatures.

Then its back on to cruise to a crabbing spot where you will pull crab pots on board to identify and see the day’s catch. If you have the courage I’ll teach you how to hold a crab without getting pinched.

Navigating our way to Shell Island Beach, we stop and get off the boat for some shell collecting then back on the boat for Captain Barry’s favorite activity… hunting for jellyfish!

We will then haul in the trawler net with its abundance of marine life. Now its time to get a taste of Chincoteague, harvesting our famous salt oysters.

Time to slow the boat down to enter the shallow waters… how many birds can you identify?

We use all of our senses – sound, touch, taste and smell – to make our cruise informative and fun. There is never any pressure, always lots of fun… you can relax, sit back on the boat and be the official photographer, or you can get into it. This is the real deal If you want to get your hands dirty and feet wet so you will experience the life of a true Chincoteague Waterman.

What To Bring And What To Expect

You may want to get off the boat, sometimes we will be barefoot “yes” and sometimes we will be walking on shells so where old shoes or water shoes. I always wear my shorts, so my pants don’t get wet. If you bring little kids they might decide to splash, dry clothes for them are a good idea. I have water on the boat to drink, your coolers are welcome, you can bring whatever you want. You may want to bring some sunblock. A sweatshirt or light jacket, especially for the sunset cruises, is a good idea because it’s always cooler on the water. We have had as young as three weeks and as old as 91 years of age crews with us. We have Coast Guard approved life jackets for all kids and adults. Clean and beautiful bathroom on board. Six passengers maximum, sorry Coast Guard regulations. The sunset champagne cruise is for adults only, but if you want to bring your kids you must book the entire boat. Be prepared for experience you’ll never forget.

About Capt. Barry

Did you ever wonder what Capt. Barry does with is time in the winter? Well, he is just as busy with volunteering in developing countries as he is on the boat. The captain boasts a myriad of characters and wears many hats. Captain Barry, who is a member of the Red Cross, travels the world over assisting those in conflicts, disasters, and poverty ridden areas.

After the tsunami of 2004, Capt. Barry teamed up with Alison Thompson (director of the documentary and book: ‘The Third Wave’) while working in Sri Lanka . Barry is a jack of all trades and a very valuable asset on the ground. From plumbing to medical aid, Barry does it all. Another great passion of his is clean drinking water. The captain has also teamed up with Livingwater and traveled to Africa and Latin America and Haiti drilling and repairing wells, reaching thousands with clean water, literally saving lives. Without water there can be no life.

In addition, Barry assists those on American soil volunteering in Mississippi and Louisiana rebuilding homes and bringing his prolific positive personality and hope to those affected by Katrina.

Barry’s latest ventures have he and his wife literally living in a tent in Haiti. The captain once again teamed up with Alison Thompson, Sean Penn and Maria Bello, flying to Haiti with supplies and a medical team mere days after the earthquake of January 12, 2010. Barry assisted in setting up and managing an IDP camp with over 60,000 people. From building bathrooms, to tents to suturing wounds, Barry once again answered the call to help but this time asked his wife, Aleda Frishman (Missy to her family and friends) to volunteer for two weeks on January 28, 2010. That two weeks is quickly turning into two years. As Barry was busy with day to day disaster relief work, Aleda noted the lack of services for women and the rate of gender based violence (GBV), especially in the Citi Soliel area, the largest slum of the western hemisphere. Captain Barry played a pivotal role in the creation of WE ADVANCE (weadvance.org), an organization that provides free medical care, community outreach programs and educational opportunities.
