Chincoteague Ponies By Name

Did you know that every Pony on Assateague Island has a registered name?

The Chincoteague Pony became an official registered breed in 1994. Every spring approximately 60 to 70 foals are born on Assateague Island. In July, the foals are auctioned off at the carnival in Chincoteague. The pony auction helps to control the size of the herd. Each year the Fire Company designates a few foals as "Buy Backs". A Buy Back Pony is a foal that is designated by the Fire Company to return to Assateague Island and live out its life there. Buy Back Ponies replenish the herd on Assateague. The Buy Backs are auctioned with the other foals. The winner of a Buy Back Pony will get to give the foal its official registry name before it is returned to Assateague.

Stallions

	Ace Black Born 2007. Has an 07 freeze brand on his left hip. Currently in the northern herd.
	Chief Palomino Born 2008. Has an 08 freeze brand on his left hip. Currently in the southern herd.
	Copper Mouse (The pony on the left) Buckskin Born 1996. Has an 06 freeze brand on his left hip.
	Courtney's Boy Chestnut Pinto Born 1996. Has an 96 freeze brand on his left hip. Currently in the northern herd.
	Fabio Chestnut Born 1996. He is orange-red in color with a thick blaze. Has a small faint 96 freeze brand on his left hip.
	Ken Chestnut Born 2008. Has a baldface. Has a very clear 08 freeze brand on his left thigh.
	Leonard's Stud Chestnut Pinto Born 1996. Has an 96 freeze brand on his left hip. Currently in the northern herd.
	Miracle Man Bay Pinto Was orphaned as a foal but survied, which is how he got his name. Currently in the southern herd.
	Prince Palomino Pinto Born 2007. Has an 07 freeze brand on his left hip. Holds the record for the highest priced foal ever sold at the auction at $17,500. Currently in the southern herd.
	Riptide Chestnut Born 2009. Has an 09 freeze brand on his left hip. Son of the famous stallion Surfer Dude. Riptide has almost the exact coloring of his father. Currently in the southern herd. Was kicked out of his father's band in the spring of 2011.
	Sockett To Me Bay Pinto Born 1996. Has an 96 freeze brand on his left hip. Currently in the southern herd.
	Spirit of Assateague Chestnut Pinto Was orginally on the Maryland side, but kept crossing down into Virginia and was finally allowed to stay.
	Surfer Dude Chestnut Born 1992. Maybe the most well know pony on Assateague. Has had as many as 17 mares in his band. Has an 92 freeze brand on his right hip. Currently in the southern herd.
	Tornado Buckskin Born 2007. Has an 07 freeze brand on his left hip. Currently in the northern herd.

	Lady Hook Chestnut Pinto Born 1996 Has a distinctive white 'hook' on her right side
	Suzy's Sweetheart Chestnut Born 1998 Has a 98 freeze brand on her left thigh
	Thetis Chestnut Pinto Born in 2001 Has an 01 freeze brand on her left thigh
	Unci Bay Very distinctive "swayback"
	Whisper Palomino Pinto Born in 2000 Has an 00 freeze brand on her left hip
