The Oyster & Maritime Museum, a non-profit educational institution, is located on Maddox Blvd just before the entrance to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Founded in 1965 by a group of island women, the museum opened in 1972 and was recently expanded in 1996. The museum tells the story of island history and of the oystering and seafood business which was the major industry of the island.

Spring Craft Show
Each Year the Oyster & Maritime Museum sponsers a Spring Craft Show. The craft show is a fund raiser for the museum. Crafters from all over come to Chincoteague Island on Easter weekend to provide their crafts for the show. There are usually also raffles, silent auctions, and door prizes. Oyster & Maritime Museum Elderhostel
Elderhostel is an educational adventure for older adults looking for something different. The later years should be a time of new beginnings, opportunities, and challenges. Elderhostel offers you a way to keep on expanding your horizons with people who are interested in the same things you are.
The Oyster & Maritime Museum's Elderhostel is one of the most reccommended in the area. The programs often contain lectures and field trips about local history, lighthouses, Chincoteague Ponies, music, and other maritime/Chincoteague subjects.
