  Captain Barry

Every wonder what Capt Barry does with is time in the winter? Well he is just as busy with volunteering in developing countries as he is on the boat. The Captain boasts a myriad of characters and wears many hats. Captain Barry, who is a member of the Red Cross, travels the world over assisting those in conflicts, disasters, and poverty ridden areas.

After the tsunami of 2004, Capt Barry teamed up with Alison Thompson (director of the documentary and book: 'The Third Wave') while working in Sri Lanka . Barry is a jack of all trades and a very valuable asset on the ground. From plumbing to medical aid, Barry does it all. Another great passion of his is clean drinking water. The Captain has also teamed up with Livingwater and traveled to Africa and Latin America and Haiti drilling and repairing wells, reaching thousands with clean water, literally saving lives. Without water there can be no life.

In addition, Barry assists those on American soil volunteering in Mississippi and Louisiana rebuilding homes and bringing his prolific positive personality and hope to those affected by Katrina.

Barry's latest ventures has he and his wife literally living in a tent in Haiti. The Captain once again teamed up with Alison Thompson, Sean Penn and Maria Bello, flying to Haiti with supplies and a medical team mere days after the earthquake of January 12, 2010. Barry assisted in setting up and managing an IDP camp with over 60,000 people. From building bathrooms, to tents to suturing wounds, Barry once again answered the call to help but this time asked his wife, Aleda Frishman (Missy to her family and friends) to volunteer for two weeks on January 28, 2010. That two weeks is quickly turning into two years. As Barry was busy with day to day disaster relief work, Aleda noted the lack of services for women and the rate of gender based violence (GBV), especially in the Citi Soliel area, the largest slum of the western hemisphere. Captain Barry played a pivotal role in the creation of WE ADVANCE (weadvance.org), an organization that provides free medical care, community outreach programs and educational opportunities.

The Captain is scheduled to return to Haiti in September. If you would like to donate or find out more information about Haiti and our organization, please visit us at weadvance.org.
