4160 Main Street,
Chincoteague Va. 23336
Prior to the Civil
War, two young men built a large Maryland "T" -shaped house on Main Street.
One was Dr. Nathaniel Smith, who treated Union troops here during the war,
and the other was Joseph Kenny, who served the Island as Postmaster. One
day a young lady came to visit from Baltimore and in due course the Postmaster
eventually fell in love and married her. Her sister came for a visit and,
would you believe, the Doctor married the sister. However, the two sisters
did not enjoy living under the same roof, so they split the house in half
and moved the front half next door.
